What Is Southwest Garden Fest?
Southwest Garden Fest is an annual, free community celebration hosted by GOODProjects in the heart of Southwest Washington, DC. Each spring, residents, families, local organizations, and visitors come together at King Greenleaf Recreation Center and the Peace Gardens to celebrate community,
nature, and renewal.
Join us on April 25th for a FREE community celebration at King Greenleaf Rec Center! Music, food, family activities, garden tours, local vendors, and more!
All in the heart of Southwest DC.
More than a neighborhood block party, SW Garden Fest is a living statement; that safe, beautiful, green community spaces are possible, that Southwest DC is thriving, and that every resident deserves a place of peace, joy, and belonging. The festival centers on environmental stewardship, horticulture education, public art, and community power.
Grounded in GOODProjects' mission to eliminate the barriers to basic needs so families can define their own success, SW Garden Fest transforms centrally located public spaces into vibrant hubs of celebration, healing, and connection. One garden, one neighbor, one season at a time.

Guided Meditations Note

THE PEACE GARDENS
Where Beauty Meets Purpose
The Southwest Peace Gardens are more than beautiful green spaces. They are a declaration that Southwest DC belongs to its residents.
Launched in the fall of 2021 in response to a wave of gun violence that shook the neighborhood, the Peace Gardens were created through a powerful partnership between GOODProjects and the Southwest Business Improvement District (SWBID), made possible by the Building Blocks DC (BBDC) grant program. An innovative, community-based approach to curbing violence by directing resources to the people and places most at risk.
Three Peace Gardens were established at the heart of Southwest DC's public housing communities:
- Behind the James Creek Resident Council — 100 N Street SW
- Next to Syphax Gardens — 1520 2nd Street SW
- Adjacent to the Southwest Family Enhancement Center at Greenleaf Gardens — 203 N Street SW
Each garden features native flowers, herb gardens that residents can harvest for personal use, public art installations, seating, and enhanced community amenities. The gardens serve as safe spaces for passive reflection and remembrance as well as programmed activities including youth community service, recreational events, and resource distribution.
A stunning STEM-inspired mural by artist Rose Jaffe, funded by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, decorates the Syphax Peace Garden, featuring NASA astronaut Jeanette J. Epps as a symbol of what Black women can achieve and the power of dreaming big.
Dedication Program Overview
The Garden Dedication will take place before the main festival program. Guests are welcome to arrive and gather organically, accompanied by soft instrumental or gospel music. The program will move gently and deliberately, with no crowd prompts or applause cues.
Community Participation Activity: Seed Notes
As part of the Garden Dedication, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a simple, heartfelt community activity: the Seed Notes.
Guests will be invited to write the name of a loved one they have lost or a message, a memory, a word of hope on a small paper seed note. These notes will be collected and placed in the garden, symbolizing the idea that those we love do not disappear. They become part of what grows.
The activity is optional, unhurried, and available throughout the dedication window and the early hours of the festival. A simple table or garden installation will serve as the collection point.
"What we plant in love, we carry forward."
Write a name. Leave a message. Plant a memory.
